Mahatma Gandhi Institute

The Rabindranath Tagore Institute, an educational and cultural centre for the promotion of shared values, was inaugurated in December 2002 and operates today under the aegis of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and Rabindranath Tagore Institute council. The attractive campus of the RTI has been established in memory of Rabindranath Tagore.

The objects of the Institute as stipulated by its Act are:

  • to establish, as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, a Centre of studies for Indian culture and traditions.
  • to promote education and culture generally.


To develop the Rabindranath Tagore Institute as a key institution for the development of a Mauritian society having plural, varied and dynamic cultural identities and the promotion of a Mauritian creative genius in its multiple expressions.

Mission Statement

The Rabindranath Tagore Institute has been entrusted with the mission of promoting education and culture and developing a plural cultural identity. In the pursuit of its mission, it will foster the preservation of the rich and diverse Indo-Mauritian cultural heritage and ensure the full expression of the Mauritian artistic and cultural creativity.
